Podrán participar en él tanto artistas españoles como extranjeros bajo la modalidad de pintura en el sentido amplio. El certamen pretende con ello explorar las nuevas modalidades de lo pictórico y ampliar sus límites, convencidos de que el futuro de la pintura está en la relación e interacción con otros medios y soportes como la fotografía, el vídeo, la escultura, la instalación y las nuevas tecnologías, que han hecho que hoy en día las posibilidades de la manipulación de la imagen sean infinitas. El certamen está entonces enfocado hacia lo que se ha dado en llamar “pintura expandida”: 3D, collage, pintura proyectada...

El premio está dotado con la cantidad de 60.000 €, que se adjudicarán íntegramente al artista premiado. En este sentido, el Certamen de Pintura de Castellón es uno de los premios de mayor cuantía económica en el mundo. Baste sólo recordar que los premios más prestigiosos del mundo, como el Turner Prize –30.000 €-, el Hugo Boss Prize –40.000 €- o el Becks’ Future –30.000 €-, están dotados con una cantidad económica individual sensiblemente inferior.

Conscientes del enfoque hacia la “pintura expandida” que se quiere dar al premio, el Certamen de Pintura de Castellón contará entre otros con expertos de talla internacional, como Barry Schwabsky, reconocido crítico de arte norteamericano y ensayista del prestigioso libro “Vitamin P. Nuevas perspectivas en la pintura” de la editorial Taschen o del prólogo de la exposición “El triunfo de la pintura” de la Colección Saatchi de pintura; la británica Karen Wright, editora y directora de la revista británica especializada en pintura por excelencia Modern Painters, y Javier Panera, director del Domus Artium (DA2) de Salamanca y comisario de exposiciones de pintores de renombre como Albert Oehlen, Fabian Marcaccio, Adriana Varejao o Inka Essenhigh. Así mismo, un pintor de renombre internacional formará parte del jurado.

Las obras serán de temática y técnica libres. Cada artista podrá concursar con una obra solamente, la cual no habrá podido ser presentada anteriormente a otro certamen. Las dimensiones máximas de las obras no podrán superar las medidas de 250 x 350 cm. Las obras, además, se presentarán con embalaje reutilizable -madera, poliespan rígido, etc...-, para permitir una apertura y cierre fácil, no siendo admitidas las obras sin el embalaje adecuado.

Los artistas deberán presentar o enviar las obras al Espai D’Art Contemporani (EACC), situado en la Calle Prim de Castellón, entre el 1 de julio y el 30 de septiembre de 2005, ambos inclusive.

La Excelentísima Diputación de Castellón organizará una exposición con las obras seleccionadas por el jurado en el Espai D’Art Contemporani de Castellón (EACC), aunque la exposición podrá itinerar a otros espacios o museos de interés, si la Diputación lo estimara oportuno.

El artista español afincado en Berlín, Pablo Alonso (Gijón, 1969), resultó ganador del I Certamen de Pintura con la obra “Orgaz” (2002), acrílico y rotulador sobre lienzo, 200x280cm. El jurado de la pasada edición, formado entre otros por el historiador de arte Daniel Giralt-Miracle, el director del Museo de Arte Moderno de Estrasburgo Emmanuel Guigon y el comisario independiente Paco Barragán, destacó “tanto la depurada e innovadora técnica, como la actualidad del tema: una indagación acerca de la propia pintura, al tiempo que cuestiona la veracidad de los medios de comunicación”.

II INTERNATIONAL PAINTING PRIZE OF THE CASTELLÓN COUNTY COUNCIL (SPAIN)


The Castellón County Council (Spain) launches one of the top painting prizes in the world, selected by a distinguished international jury.

With the intention of creating a prestigious painting prize in the national and international artscene, the Castellón County Council (Valencia Region, Spain) announces the II International Painting Prize.

Any artist is invited to take part, regardless of his/her nationality or residence. The prize seeks to explore the new pictorical modes
convinced that the future of painting lies in its relationship and interaction with other media such as photography, video, sculpture, installation and new technologies, which have made the possibilities for manipulating images limitless. It is a prize primarily focused towards “expanded painting”: 3D, collage, projected painting…

There is one first prize of 60.000 € payable to the artist of the awarded work.
In this sense, the Castellón Painting Prize is one of the highest paid awards in the world, when taking into consideration prizes like the Turner Prize, the Hugo Boss Prize or Becks’ Future.


Aware of the focus towards “expanded painting”, the Castellón Painting Prize has selected a distinguished international jury whose members are among others Barry Schwabsky, renowned American art critic and essayist of Taschen’s “Vitamin P. New Perspectives in Painting” as well as author of the essay of the Saatchi Painting Collection “The Triumph of Painting”; British Karen Wright, editor and director of Modern Painters, the Bristish art magazine specialized par excellence in painting; and Javier Panera, director of Domus Artium (DA2), the Contemporary Art Centre in Salamanca, Spain, and curator of large exhibitions dedicated to painters like Albert Oehlen, Fabian Marcaccio, Adriana Varejao or Inka Essenhigh. Besides, a renowned international painter (to be confirmed) will be part of the panel.


All works should be original, with free theme and technique –2D, 3D, mixed media, collage, projected painting...-. Each artist can enter one work, which must not having been submitted at any other contest. The maximum dimensions of the works should not exceed 250 by 350 cm.

The artists should send their works to the ESPAI D´ART CONTEMPORANI, placed at C/ PRIM in Castellón, within the period going from 1st July to 30th September 2005 inclusive.

With the purpose of promoting the Prize, the Castellón County Council shall arrange an exhibition at the Espai, the Contemporary Art Centre of the City of Castellón, with the works selected by the members of the Jury.

The jury of the first edition, including art historian Daniel Giralt-Miracle, the director of the Museum of Modern Art in Strasbourg Emmanuel Guigon, and independent curator Paco Barragán, pointed out “the artist’s subtle and innovative technique as well as the current important of the theme it depicts: an investigation about painting’s nature which at the same time questions critically the veracity of mass-media”.
